Gujarat is experiencing unseasonal rains, due to which farmers are affected. The crops in the field have been severely damaged. Due to rains in Mehsana district, crops including cotton, jowar, castor have been severely affected.
Mehsana: Sudden rain yesterday in Sunak village and surrounding areas of Unjha taluk of Mehsana district has taken away the smile from the faces of the farmers. These gusts during the festive period are causing worry and loss for many farmers. The direct impact of drought especially on traditional crops like cotton, sorghum and castor has raised the possibility of huge economic losses to the farmers.
Cotton weaving process has started in many fields of the village, but labor is not available due to sudden rains. Due to which the open cotton in the field has become wet. Farmer Prakashbhai Patel says, “Cotton buds have started growing, but the buds have turned yellow due to rain. If this pattern continues, there is a possibility that new plants will start emerging from inside the cotton, which may damage the entire crop.”
Farmers in the surrounding villages including Sunak, Dabhi, Singh of Unjha taluka are also facing the same situation. As the sorghum crop had already been harvested, many farmers kept sorghum in the form of pools in the field. But due to the rains, the ponds have become soaked, due to which the useful fodder for animal husbandry is also in a state of destruction. Farmers report that crops could not be managed due to non-availability of labor on festival days, and sudden rains have worsened the puddles in the fields.

The Meteorological Department has predicted light rains in the next 1-2 days, adding to farmers’ worries. Farmers of Sunak village are told that “If this rain continues, along with jowar and cotton crops, castor crops will also be affected.” Castor sowing has become a headache for farmers this year. The castor crop was sown three times earlier, but each time the rains damaged it. While the castor bean crop, which was sown for the fourth time, was barely audible, the repeated rains have threatened that crop as well. Due to the closure of the market yard, the farmers could not even start selling the crops. Large farmers have stored crops in few places, but small and medium scale farmers are unable to save crops in the field as they do not have such facilities. Waterlogging of fields is likely to cause further damage to crops.
Sudden rains in Sunak village and surrounding areas of Unjha taluk of Mehsana district have caused heavy damage to the farmers. Prakashbhai Patel, along with other farmers of the village, says, “This situation has had the biggest impact on small farmers. Those who have crops in their fields, are worried about the crops even at night. If the drought continues in the coming days, a large part of the cotton and jowar crops in the entire taluk may spoil.” Farmers are praying that the weather will be favorable and that there will not be more rain in the future, so that their hard work and hope will be saved.
