The Bayer coach still sees opportunities for its Leverkusener in the title race against Bayern Munich.
March is not over yet, Xabi Alonso has already proclaimed the upcoming April in almost old tradition in the month of truth. “I always said: In April we make the goal very clear. Now it’s about fighting for this opportunity. It’s not easy, but the will and the wish are clear,” said Bayer Leverkusen coach with a view of the title race.
Means: Alonso has not yet written off the championship. Alonso had only wanted to talk about the title in April in the past season. This year, however, the starting situation is a completely different one: While the Leverkuseners had already made the first championship in club history perfect in mid -April in mid -April, Bayer now needs a catch -up.
In the league you can shorten the deficit to leader Bayern Munich by winning on Friday (8.30 p.m./DAZN) against VfL Bochum, at least temporarily to three points. The game is “super important”, now “the moment when everything can decide. We want to put as much pressure as possible,” said Alonso, who had left his future in Leverkusen beyond the summer on Thursday.
In April, the semi-finals of the DFB Cup at Arminia Bielefeld are waiting for before four Bundesliga games against Heidenheim, Union Berlin, St. Pauli and Augsburg that are the “key”, “to have a chance”, as Alonso emphasized. The goal? Bayern should “feel that they are not up alone. We want to be a danger for them. We have to win almost everything”.
