O Club World Cup that starts this Saturday (14), in the United States, gathers for the first time 32 Clubs of all continents in the fight for the “best team on the planet”. But that does not mean that the dispute is new within the sport.
Since 1960, five other formats and with different names have existed to determine the world champion in men’s football. Not to mention other tournaments that had no official recognition of entities such as Conmebol, UEFA and FIFA.
Below, the ESPN.com.br Remember each competition that was played as a club World Cup, as well as all those who were champions in each season:
1960 a 1979
Competition created with UEFA and CONMEBOL approval, the Copa Intercontinental had his first format between 1960 and 1979. He was played in a direct final between the champion of the Liberators (South America) and the champion of European Champions Cup (former Champions League format), always in two matches, one on each continent. If necessary, there would be an extra game to decide the title.
This format consecrated the Santos from Pelé, champion twice in 1962 and 1963 against Benfica e Milanrespectively. The Brazilian team sent the two finals in Maracanã, not in Vila Belmiro.
The tiebreaker was replaced by penalties from 1969. The tournament was not held in two years: 1975 (Bayern de Munich X independent) E 1978 (Liverpool x Boca Juniors), largely for European disinterest.

Still named the same name, the Intercontinental Cup (or World Interclubes, as it became known in Brazil from the 1990s) adapted the format from 1980. Instead of a match on each continent, it was decided that the trophy would be played in a single game, always held in Tokyo, Japan, in December.
The idea of promoting football in the East has even won a special sponsorship of the Toyota multinational car automaker. The company also offered an additional trophy, called “Toyota Cup”, as well as a car to the best player in the final.
The first Brazilian to win it was the Flemish of Zico, in 1981, by beating Liverpool 3-0. But the great popularization took place with the São Paulotwo -time champion in 1992 and 1993, with remarkable victories about Barcelona and Milan, repeating the feat of Santos 30 years earlier.

2000
FIFA decided to organize, in January 2000, the first edition of the Club World Cup, already with this nomenclature. The headquarters chosen was Brazil, which offered two stadiums: Morumbi, in São Paulo, and Maracanã, in Rio de Janeiro. Each group, formed by four teams, acted in a city.
The tournament had two Brazilians: Corinthians e Vascoin a choice that to this day causes controversy. This is because the Palm treeschampion of Conmebol Libertadores From 1999, he was excluded with the promise that he would participate the following year in 2001 in Spain. The problem is that such an edition has never left the paper.
Corinthians, who had nothing to do with the controversy, faced Vasco in a 100% Brazilian final in Maracanã and won the title on penalties, after Edmundo kicked the last charge out. Interestingly, the Intercontinental Cup continued, so much so that in December 2000, Boca Juniors took the title by hitting Real Madrid.
2005 a 2023
The World Cup resumed again by FIFA in 2005, without the Intercontinental Cup. In this new mold, the tournament would take place annually, with rotating headquarters (Japan, United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Qatar and Saudi Arabia) and representatives of all continents.
The 2005 and 2006 editions, won by São Paulo and Internationalthey had six clubs, but a seventh vacancy was opened from 2007 to include also the headquarters representative. In addition to the two already mentioned, Corinthians was the only South American to lift the trophy in 2012. In the other years, only Europeans were champions.

2024
With the idea of a 32 -team club World Cup, to be held every four years, such as the World Cup between teams, FIFA resumed the idea of the Intercontinental Cup, whose rehearsal was in 2024.
The goal is to ensure that there is a “world champion” every year. Therefore, the winners of the continental tournaments of the season face each other in an eliminatory tournament.
The European champion only competes one match, as he has a guaranteed presence in the final. The others pass through other knockouts. Concacaf and Conmebol teams play the “Derby of the Americas” in the quarterfinals. Those who win go to the semifinal to face the survivor of the confrontation between representatives of Africa, Asia and Oceania.
So far, in the only edition held, the champion has been Real Madrid. Libertadores winner, the Botafogo ended up eliminated by Pachuca Right in the first duel.
