‘I had decided not to do a Malayalam film after that!’ says Vimala Raman

After making an impressive debut in Tamil cinema in 2006, Vimala Raman stepped into Malayalam cinema with the movie Timedirected by Shaji Kailas and starring Suresh Gopi in the lead role. After acting in the film, she went on to feature in several other movies, including Saranayakalam, Christian, College Kumaranand Calcutta News.

In an interview with a Malayalam magazine, the actor shared her experiences and journey into the Malayalam film industry. Speaking about her transition from Tamil to Malayalam cinema, Vimala revealed, “When I first came back to India from Australia, I experienced a cultural shock. Since I was coming from Tamil cinema, I hadn’t seen many Malayalam films at that time. Honestly, I didn’t know much about the Malayalam film industry at all. But when I got the opportunity, I knew only one thing — it was a great opportunity for me.”

However, Vimala admits that it was the warm reception she received from the Malayalam film industry that kept her going. “When I entered Malayalam cinema, I loved the attitude of the people here. But I struggled with the language initially and had decided not to do another Malayalam film at that point. But the support from the audience made me stay.”

Vimala further shared an emotional moment, recalling, “To be honest, the response I received from Malayali audiences was something I had never anticipated. When my intro played in the theatre and the audience embraced me, I was so overwhelmed that I cried in the theatre.”
