A bomb threat was reported at the residence of actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader Vijay early this morning. Immediately after investigation, police arrested the caller who made the call.
According to police sources, a phone call was received at the police control room around 2 a.m., claiming that a bomb had been planted at Vijay’s residence. Following the alert, the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) and the local police immediately rushed to the spot.
Police personnel along with the bomb squad who arrived at Vijay’s house in Neelankarai on ECR, around 4.30 a.m. with a sniffer dog named Uthama, were permitted inside only after Vijay woke up around 7 a.m. The security guards at the residence informed the team that Vijay was still asleep and could not be disturbed.
After being allowed in at 7:05 a.m., the bomb squad conducted a thorough inspection of the premises for about half an hour and declared that the threat was a hoax.
Later, the Neelangarai police, with the help of cybercrime police traced the caller in Nanganallur, and arrested him. The arrested man has been identified as Shafeeq, 37, a native of Nagercoil who is presently living in Nanganallur. He made the call while he was in a drunken mood, the police sources said.
This is the second time in 11 days that a bomb threat had been reported at Mr. Vijay’s residence. Similar hoax calls were received at the DGP’s office and the police control room on September 28 and again on Wednesday (October 7) night.
