Jarry completes sensational comeback to beat Rune in five-set-thriller

Nicolas Jarry on Monday completed a stunning comeback to knock Holger Rune out of the Wimbledon tournament. Jarry lost the first two sets but turned the game around in sensational fashion to win 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

What looked like a certain ticket to the next round, turned into an early exit for Holger Rune at Wimbledon.

The eighth-seeded Dane won the first two sets against Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarrywho is ranked 143 in the world, but squandered his comfortable lead and lost in five sets 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 4-6.

Rune seemed completely in control in the first part of the match, but when he lost an even third set, the match tipped in favor of the well-serving Jarry.

Especially during the fourth set, Rune seemed to suffer in the heat and he also received treatment on his knee.

He found a little more energy in the fifth set, where things were even, until Jarry broke Rune’s serve to lead 5-4 and subsequently served home the match.

Rune, however, could not have dreamed of a better start to the match, when two double faults from Jarry helped Rune to break the former World No 16 in the first game of the match.

Jarry had difficulty finding his footing, and Rune exploited it to take a 4-0 lead. The Chilean gradually improved during the set, but could not prevent Rune from winning 6-4.

The 201-centimetre-long Jarry got his serve going, but from the backline Rune’s basic strokes were markedly better, and it looked only a matter of time before Rune would secure the break which he accomplished at 5-3.

Rune followingly was forced to fend off a break ball and was dragged through a long game, before he finally won the second set 6-4 to take a 2-0 lead.

But Jarry never gave in, he slowly turned the momentum in his favor and won the set 7-5, when he managed to break Rune at the end of the set.

Rune looked completely exhausted from the beginning of the fourth set and immediately fell behind 0-3.

Whether it was the heat or lack of nutrition that bothered Rune was difficult to assess but at 2-5 in the fourth set, Rune asked for a medical timeout and received treatment for his knee.

He played on with a bandage and shortly after lost the fourth set.

Rune had more energy in the fifth set, but Jarry had the edge in the decisive duels and recorded a very surprising win.
