Preview: New England Revolution vs CF Montreal – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Friday’s MLS clash between New England Revolution and CF Montreal, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

In game two of a four-game MLS homestand, the New England Revolution will welcome CF Montreal to Gillette Stadium on Friday in the final meeting between both sides this season.

A 2-1 defeat to Orlando City put the Revs eight points below the Eastern Conference playoff linewhile Montreal are still at the bottom of the standings following a 2-0 loss at home to the Chicago Fire.

Match preview

The Revs’ campaign, which looked quite promising heading into June, has gone south since then as this side aim to stop the bleeding at last this weekend.

Caleb Porter’s team entered June on a nine-match unbeaten run in this competition, but with a draw or defeat on Friday, would end July on a nine-game winless run in league play.

Eight of their 10 regular-season defeats in 2025 have been by just a single goal, two of which occurred after they had drawn first blood.

New England have lost their last two home contests and could equal their longest losing run at Gillette Stadium from a year ago with another defeat on Friday.

Three times domestically this year, the Revolution have come away empty-handed from a league contest in which they scored the opening goal, and those nine points dropped are looming large in the playoff picture right now.

With a win on Friday, they will sweep their season series with Le CFM for the first time since the 2021 campaign, having beaten them in Montreal earlier this year by a score of 3-0.

Another solid effort by Montreal last Saturday proved to be in vain as this team’s hopes of making the playoffs on consecutive occasions is looking less and less likely with every game.

Montreal have 18 points to make up in the post-season race, and have only 10 matches remaining, so needless to say time is of the essence if they are to make up that ground.

Marco Donadel’s would equal their longest losing run in the competition this year with another defeat on Friday, as they have yet to win a competitive fixture this month.

That said, perhaps playing on the road is what is best for them right now, with this side earning at least a point in two of their previous three MLS away games.

Two of their three league triumphs in 2025 have come away from home, as they have a 100% record as the visitors this year when netting the opening goal.

Le CFM have points in two of their previous three visits to Gillette Stadium, coming from two goals down to collect a 2-2 draw in this exact fixture last year.

Team News

CF Montreal striker Giacomo celebrates a goal on May 24, 2025

In their defeat to Orlando City, the Revs’ Ignatius Ganago was out with a quad strain, while Brayan Ceballos returned from an upper body injury, but must sit out of this match due to yellow card accumulation.

Tomas Chancalay had the only goal for them last weekend, his third of the campaign in his fourth straight appearance, though it only drew his side level for three minutes.

As for Montreal, Jalen Neal was the only notable absence as he was dealing with an ankle injury, while the club recently acquired Efrain Morales in a trade with Atlanta United in exchange for General Allocation Money (GAM).

There were two new faces in their starting 11 against the Fire, with Jonathan Sirois replacing Sebastian Breza in goal and Fernando Alvarez starting on defence instead of Dawid Bugaj.

New England Revolution possible starting lineup:

Ivacic; Omsberg, Fofana, Beason; Feingold, Polster, Yusuf, Miller; Gil; Campana, Diaz

CF Montreal possible starting lineup:

Sirois; Waterman, Craig, Bugaj, Petrasso; Loturi, Piette; Sealy, Synchuk, Herbers; Owusu

We say: New England Revolution 1-1 CF Montreal

Neither side have been very convincing throughout the year, and that lack of confidence may lead to a stale and sloppy draw on Friday.
