Row erupts over leasing GU land for food stalls

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat University (GU) is facing fresh allegations over land allocation, with the Congress claiming that about 15,000 sq yard of land near the Blind People’s Association has been leased to Radhe Enterprise for commercial food stalls without inviting tenders or conducting a transparent bidding process.According to the opposition party, the land was leased for 11 months at a daily rent of Rs 75,000, allegedly to benefit close associates. Congress spokespersons accused vice-chancellor Nirja Gupta of approving the deal without competing offers, calling it proof that the Common University Act has eroded democratic processes in public universities and opened the door to commercialisation of prime educational land.Congress leaders alleged that Radhe Enterprise has already begun preparing the site to set up large-scale food stalls and a market, effectively converting land donated for academic purposes into a commercial hub. They also questioned whether senior govt officials, including the education minister, were aware of or involved in the decision. No record has been made public showing that the GU Syndicate discussed or approved the lease. The Congress pointed out that the application for the land was submitted on March 29, and approved within five months — a speed they described as “unprecedented” for a property of such scale.Congress leader Parthivrajsinh Kathwadia criticised the move, arguing that while students face shortages in classrooms, laboratories, and hostels, university leadership appears more focused on “lucrative deals” than on academic needs. The party has demanded full disclosure of the lease terms and a probe into the decision-making process.
