Ruben Amorim is about to enter the business end of the season in the Europa League and the FA Cup, with the Premier League arguably already a write-off.
Everything hinges on those two competitions, while the objective in the league has to be to just keep the head above the water.
For that Man Utd need all the help they can get, a plea that took a big hit after Lisandro Martinez’s injury update revealed the extent of his issue.
Martinez had become irreplaceable at that left-sided centre-back spot due to his unique skillset but Ruben amorim has just been handed an unexpected solution to the dilemma.
Ruben Amorim’s Lisandro Martinez Replacement
In a back-three setup, arguably the most important trait for the left-sided defender is to be left-footed which opens up the passing angles out wide.
This is why it was a fair assumption that Ayden Heaven’s role might increase at Man Utd from what was initially envisioned for him.
Luke Shaw’s return also became a priority for the same reason, especially since Jonny Evans lacks the pace to chase after attackers as a wide centre-back.
However, Amorim has just been handed an unexpected solution in the form of Leny Yoroa right-footed defender who, in his own words, likes playing on the left.
In an interview with Rio Ferdinand on his YouTube channel, Yoro said that he can come inside and play raking balls to the striker when stationed on the left.
He said: “I’m right-footed so it’s more easy for me sometimes on the right but I really like to play on the left. Because when I come inside I can put a long ball to the striker or [play into] the middle. It’s no problem for me.”
Leny Yoro’s mentality is elite
Yoro’s insistence on being available to do the job the team needs, instead of what he wants is exactly the type of mentality needed in the Man Utd squad.
The Frenchman has had an up-and-down time of things at Old Trafford so far, as should be expected from a teenager learning on the job under the most spotlight in English football.
Ferdinand is a huge fan of Yoro as well and has backed him multiple times to become one of the world’s best despite some shaky moments that build a youngster’s character.
If Yoro can step up and make the left centre-back position his own going forward, it will increase the options available at Amorim’s disposal and allow him to ease Heaven into the team.
