It’s been a quiet 2025 for Will Smith so far after starring in Bad Boys: Ride or Die last year, but one of the actor’s oldest and most iconic projects has returned to streaming charts years later. Smith stars alongside Tommy Lee Jones (No Country for Old Men) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil: Born Again) in Men in Blackthe 1997 sci-fi comedy following agents of a secret government agency that investigates extraterrestrial life on Earth. Men in Black is currently streaming on Starzand it’s one of the most popular movies in America on the streamer, sitting at #6 at the time of writing. Men in Black earned a “certified fresh” 91% from critics and an 81% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoesand it also grossed a whopping $589 million at the box office against a $90 million budget.
Will Smith sat down with Kevin Hart in 2023 to talk about their respective careers, and he dropped a bomb about Men in Black. He revealed to Hart that he “didn’t want to make” Men in Blackciting his previous work on Independence Daythe 1996 classic alien invasion film. Smith said he didn’t want to make “two alien movies back to back,” but it’s a good thing he did — each film was universally beloved and hailed as some of his greatest career works. Smith also revealed that he never wanted to make other movies such as The Pursuit of Happynessor Alibut that producer James Lassiter convinced him to do both projects. Barry Sonnenfeld directed Men in Black with a script from Ed Solomon. The film is based on the comics by Lowell Cunningham.
What’s Next for Will Smith?
One of Will Smith’s most intriguing upcoming projects is I Am Legend 2the sequel to his hit 2007 dystopian sci-fi film. Smith will star alongside Michael B. Jordan in the sequel, which will go off the alternate ending to the original film, where his character, Dr. Robert Neville, survived. Smith will also reunite with original Bad Boys director Michael Bay for Fast and Loosean upcoming action thriller with a script from Marvel veteran writer Eric Pearson. There have even been rumors of a sequel to his standalone superhero movie, Hancockfor years, but updates on the film have been silent for a while now.
